InformationHours: 9-6 Daily (5pm Dec.-Feb.)Address: 120 West Andy Devine Ave., Kingman, AZ 86401 / 928-753-9889 The Route 66 Museum is truly unique in that it is a museum of history, housed in the unique and historical Powerhouse building, located in the “heart” of the longest remaining stretch of the 2400 miles that was Route 66. We are located on Historic Route 66 in the Powerhouse Visitor Center in downtown Kingman, across from Locomotive Park and a block from the Mohave Museum of History & Arts. The Route 66 Museum depicts the historical evolution of travel along the 35th parallel that became Route 66. Our brilliant murals, photos and life-size dioramas capture each of the groups that have traveled the route that has come to be known as the Mother Road. “Superbly curated, “Impressive new Route 66 Museum” “…we are happy to report that it is first-class, something every Route 66 traveler in Arizona should see.”
TheaterWith each admission to the Route 66 Museum, we include a showing of one of our collection of short Route 66 films. The theater was our answer as to what to do with the odd spaces around the large concrete footings on which the power generating equipment was mounted. The theater can accommodate 20 persons and with advanced notice, it can easily accommodate 9 additional visitors. As in the museum space, the theater is wheel chair accessible. In the case of groups that are larger than the theater’s seating capacity, it is recommended that the group divide and half visit the museum while the other half watches the video. In this manner, groups of up to 60 persons can take our complete journey in about an hour. It must be cautioned that true museum goers will require considerably more time in which to enjoy our museum. The current record is just short of 5 hours. The theater area is also available as a training/presentation venue on an after hours basis. Contact the Kingman Area Chamber of Commerce for more details.
Exhibits Travel through time to see where it all began. In order to tell of the most famous highway in America, it must first be explained that the evolution of Route 66 is the Story of Travel Along the 35th Parallel. You will learn the what, why and when of life along the most legendary road in America.
Our museum experience includes the presentation of a short film from our Route 66 library.
The Powerhouse was built and operated by the Desert Power & Light Company during the first portion of the 20th century. This facility is responsible for the electricity that lighted the way for the earliest Route 66 travelers. Your VisitSince our museum opened in May of 2001, a variety of individuals and groups have found different ways to enjoy our facility.Individuals Individual visitors can purchase admission tokens for the turnstile in one of the shops located upstairs, here in the Powerhouse. Groups (20 - 100 people) Our theater can accommodate 20 persons, and with prior notice up to 29. Larger groups can divide up and swap between the museum and the theater offerings. School Groups We can aid your group by providing a tour guide or we can allow your class to take its’ own journey back in time. We do insist that all young persons be escorted by a responsible adult. As an educational enhancement, the staff has put together a list of questions in the form of Museum Hunt that is designed for the 4th – 6th grade level. The questions are designed to direct the student’s attention to the content on display. Individually, the list can engage a student for an hour. Within the span of time that most groups are allowed to stay, the hunt is best handled by collaborative groups of 3-5 students. Adult involvement helps considerably. We commonly show the school groups a 26 minute film by John Craft, PhD, a Professor at Arizona State University, titled “Along Old 66”. The film is similar to the theme of the museum, the film explains the history of Route 66 and is a nice reinforcement to the learning experience offered by the museum exhibits. Large Groups (more than 100 people) StaffThe continuing success of the museum is due to the volunteers who staff the facility. The wealth of knowledge and experience that they have brought to the benefit of the museum cannot be overlooked. The Route 66 Museum is a tribute to the area, its history and the preservation of a very special portion of the Mother Road. When you visit this museum you are in the middle of what is essentially a 158 mile long living museum. It represents the longest remaining, and arguably the most picturesque portion of Route 66. On behalf of the of the Route 66 Historical Museum, the Powerhouse Visitors Center, the City of Kingman, Arizona, welcome and enjoy. Links
